Frequently asked questions
The questions our customers ask most, with short answers. If yours isn't here, message us on WhatsApp.
About the garage
Do I need an appointment?
We work by appointment, but you can also come in without one and we'll see you. We're a family garage and we organise ourselves flexibly: send us a WhatsApp or give us a call and we'll find the best time for you.
Can I service my car here without losing the manufacturer's warranty?
Yes. In the European Union you can have your car serviced at an independent garage without losing the warranty, as long as the manufacturer's specifications are followed and equivalent-quality parts are used. We follow your manufacturer's plan and explain what's due now and what can wait, without adding work your car doesn't need.
How much experience do you have?
The garage opened in May 2025, but Peedo, Karsen's mechanic, has more than 20 years of experience in the motor trade: he worked at Volvo and Ford dealerships and ran his own bodywork business in Estonia for 13 years. And you talk to him directly, with no middlemen.
Are you part of a chain or a franchise?
No. Karsen Taller is an independent, family-run garage in Torrevieja. No call centres, no chain protocols: you talk directly to Peedo and Marjaana. We adapt to you: your language, your schedule and, if needed, an emergency in the middle of your holiday.
Can I keep driving with a warning light on?
It depends on the light. Send us a photo of the dashboard on WhatsApp and we'll tell you whether it's urgent. If needed, we diagnose it at the workshop: Peedo, Karsen's mechanic, doesn't stop at what the computer says, he also listens to the car and test-drives it to find the real cause.
Do you work on cars with foreign plates?
Yes. We repair and service cars registered in any country, and we can also register your car in Spain. We explain everything in English, Spanish or Estonian.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
Every car is different, so we don't give blind prices. Send us the number plate or VIN on WhatsApp and we'll give you a quote before we start, explained: what's essential and what can wait. We don't do anything without your approval.
What warranty do repairs have?
Repairs are guaranteed for 3 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. Cars we sell come with 1 year. The warranty is stated on the invoice and, if something isn't right, you talk directly to the person who did the work.
What parts do you use?
Original or quality equivalent parts, depending on what the car needs and what you prefer. If there are options, we explain them so you can choose, and we show you the part we replaced.
Can you inspect a car before I buy it?
Yes. We inspect it on the lift and tell you what faults it has and what they would cost to fix, so you can negotiate the price. And because we're a garage, if you buy it we can look after its servicing afterwards.
Can you take care of the ITV?
Yes. We do the pre-ITV check, fix what's needed and, if you like, take the car to the ITV ourselves. You just leave us the keys.
Do you work on electric cars or motorhomes?
No. We work on petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, including automatics.
Which languages do you speak?
In English, Spanish and Estonian, from start to finish: your enquiry, the quote and handing the car back. We're a family from Estonia: we know what it's like to sort out a car problem in a country that isn't your own.
How can I pay?
Cash, card or bank transfer.
Servicing and maintenance
What does a car service include?
An oil and filter change, plus a check of the brakes, tyres, battery and fluid levels, and whatever the manufacturer sets for your mileage. We also check the other filters even if they're not due: we have sometimes found filters that should have been changed and weren't.
Will I lose my manufacturer's warranty if I don't service at the dealer?
No. In the European Union you can have your car serviced at an independent garage without losing the warranty, as long as the manufacturer's specifications are followed and equivalent-quality parts are used. We follow your manufacturer's plan and record it on the invoice.
How much does a service or an oil change cost?
It depends on the car, the engine and what's due at your mileage. Message us on WhatsApp with your number plate and we'll give you the quote before we start, separating what's essential from what can wait, so you decide.
Do I need an appointment for an oil change?
We work by appointment, but we also see you without one. We're a small family garage and we fit around your schedule whenever we can.
How often should I change my car's oil?
The manufacturer sets it depending on the engine and the oil, usually every 15,000 to 30,000 km or once a year. With your number plate we can tell you your car's interval.
How often should the timing belt be changed?
The manufacturer sets it in kilometres and in years, whichever comes first. With your number plate we can tell you when your car is due. It's one of the engine jobs Peedo, Karsen's mechanic, has most experience with: we check the water pump and any coolant leaks at the same time.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Most manufacturers say every 2 years, because it absorbs moisture over time and braking gets worse. We check it at every service.
My car has been parked for months. What should be checked?
Mainly the battery, tyres, brakes and fluid levels. Many of our customers spend part of the year outside Spain, so we see it often. If it won't start, message us with your number plate and where the car is.
Can you tell me what my car will need over the coming months?
Yes. We do a mechanical check and give you a quote so you can plan the costs without surprises. Customers ask us for it because many garages don't offer it.
Do you only replace what's needed?
Yes. We don't replace parts that are still fine and should last many more kilometres. We show you the old part and the cause of the problem, so you can check for yourself.
What parts do you use?
Original or equivalent-quality parts, depending on what the car needs and what you prefer.
What warranty do repairs have?
3 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. The warranty is stated on the invoice.
Brakes, suspension and engine
Is it worth repairing a car that's more than 10 years old?
If it's been looked after, almost always. We tell you what it needs now and what's worth planning for, so you can decide with real numbers. Peedo, Karsen's mechanic, prefers to repair properly what can be fixed rather than simply replace it.
Will you show me the part you replaced?
Yes. We show you the replaced part and the cause of the problem, so you can check for yourself.
Do you do welding?
Yes, on exhausts and flexi pipes, although it isn't our main work.
Do you repair brakes or replace them completely?
It depends on their condition. If a caliper is sticking or the handbrake isn't working, it can often be cleaned and restored instead of replacing the whole part. It's a job that takes time and skill, and it saves you money.
Air conditioning
How often does car air conditioning need recharging?
A circuit in good condition shouldn't need frequent recharges. If it cools less every summer, there's usually a small leak, so we look for it before recharging. We've found leaks that other garages hadn't managed to locate.
Do you recharge R1234yf gas?
Yes. We are certified for R134a and for R1234yf, the gas used in almost every car registered since 2017.
How much does a car air conditioning recharge cost?
It depends on which gas your car uses and whether anything needs repairing. Send us your number plate on WhatsApp and we'll give you the price before we start.
Do you work on hybrid cars?
Yes, on petrol, diesel and hybrid cars. We don't work on fully electric cars.
Diagnostics and warning lights
Can I keep driving with the engine warning light on?
It depends on the light and how the car is running. Send us a photo of the dashboard on WhatsApp and we'll tell you whether it's urgent. If needed, we diagnose it at the workshop with diagnostic equipment, and Peedo, Karsen's mechanic, also listens to the car, checks for play and road-tests it: the fix isn't always a new part or a software update.
Do you diagnose hybrid and automatic cars?
Yes. We work on petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, automatics too.
What about cars on foreign plates?
Yes, we diagnose and repair cars registered in any country.
Pre-ITV (Spanish MOT)
How often does a car need the ITV in Spain?
For a passenger car, the first ITV is due 4 years after registration; then every 2 years until the car is 10 years old, and every year after that.
My engine warning light is on and the ITV is in two days. Can you look at it?
Yes, message us as soon as you can. We diagnose it and fix the cause: just clearing the light doesn't help, because it comes back on, and at the ITV a lit fault warning light can count as a defect.
What happens if my car fails the ITV?
You get a deadline to fix the faults and go back to the station. We repair them at the workshop and, if you like, take the car back for you.
Can you take my car to the ITV for me?
Yes. You leave us the keys at the workshop, we do what's needed and take the car to the ITV station ourselves. You collect it with the ITV passed.
Car battery
Why do you test the battery before replacing it?
Because sometimes the car won't start for another reason. We test its capacity so we don't replace a battery that still works.
Can you replace the battery straight away?
It depends on whether we need to order it. Message us with your number plate and we'll tell you when it can be ready. If you let us know in advance, we order it so it's ready when you arrive.
I'm back from the airport and my car won't start. What should I do?
Message us on WhatsApp with the number plate and where the car is. We'll tell you how to get it to us and give you a quote before we start.
Pre-purchase inspection
Can I bring a car that a private seller is selling?
Yes. Usually you arrange to meet the seller and bring the car to the workshop. We inspect it and tell you the result there and then or on WhatsApp.
Do you inspect cars of any make?
Yes, we work on all makes: petrol, diesel and hybrid, automatics too. We don't inspect fully electric cars or motorhomes.
How much is a pre-purchase inspection?
Message us on WhatsApp with the make and model and we'll tell you the price before you come.
What if the car has foreign plates?
No problem: we work on cars from any country and, if you buy it, we can also register it in Spain.
How is this different from a mobile inspection?
We inspect the car on a workshop lift with diagnostic equipment, so we see the underbody, suspension and brakes properly. And if you buy it, we can look after its servicing and any repairs afterwards.
Register a foreign car in Spain
Do you repair cars on foreign plates?
Yes. We service and repair cars registered in any country, including while the Spanish registration is in progress.
How much does it cost to register a foreign car in Spain?
It depends on the country of origin, the car's age and its emissions, which affect the taxes. Message us with the car's details and we'll tell you for your case.
Can you explain it in English?
Yes. We deal with you in English, Spanish or Estonian throughout the whole process.
English-speaking garage
Which languages do you speak?
English, Spanish and Estonian, from start to finish: the enquiry, the quote and the handover of the car.
Can I message you in English on WhatsApp?
Yes. Write to us in whichever language you prefer and we'll reply in the same one.
How can I pay?
Cash, card or bank transfer.
Why do you speak Estonian?
Because we're a family from Estonia: Peedo and Marjaana run the garage. That's why many Estonians on the Costa Blanca bring us their cars, and we also serve customers in English and Spanish.
Breakdown on holiday
Do you have a tow truck?
No. Your insurer's roadside assistance can tow the car to our workshop.
Can you lend me a courtesy car?
We don't offer courtesy cars. But we're flexible: if your car breaks down on holiday, we try to see it the same day and keep you updated on WhatsApp in your language.
Are you open at weekends?
No. We're open Monday to Friday, but you can message us on WhatsApp whenever you like.
Got another question?
Message us on WhatsApp with your number plate and we'll reply in English, Spanish or Estonian.
